Indian Summer

Fall-springbank

Golden leaves are scattered on the ground, like hundreds of mini suns. Thanksgiving has past, and we are still enjoying beautiful fall weather which is such a welcome rarity that I am grateful for. The hunter’s moon, the brightest of the year, spilled greenish grey pools of light, its penumbra shadows slipping between the beats of my heart.

me and guitar

The job search continues, and I hope I will find something permanent soon-in an area that is related to my to my passions. I really did not think it would take this long to find something suitable. There is a job out there for me somewhere where I can make a difference.

I am so enjoying teaching piano and guitar~it’s only part-time at the moment, but it is so thrilling to see the students learn and be excited about what they are doing. The gift of music is priceless, and one does not become a master at their trade, until they are able to pass it along to someone else. I am also rehearsing to re-enter the performance world, yet sorry to say the cats are not enthusiastic about my practice.

window-mural-triptych

I went back to do another window, and here are all three. I like how all three tie together. Must go by at night and see the glow of the moon with the solar paint.

It paid to put out a call on Twitter in my city thread. Great timing to be sure, and now I have another possible small mural lining up. Interesting things are beginning to happen. Stay tuned … I am laying a lot of groundwork at the moment. Also, I just wanted to send out a special thank you to my loyal visitors. I will try to make my response time to comments a little quicker. This blog post I had started nearly three weeks ago. Sometimes I get carried away.

The Golden Hour

golden-hour

This is the golden hour by the river in Bowness Park in my neighborhood. Shortly after this picture was taken many golden leaves scattered to the ground. Like hundreds of mini suns.

In the night trees swayed in the early autumn wind, giving the streetlamps the illusion of flickering. Nearby the groan of metal wheels on steel tracks heard in the distance quieted the sound of the coyotes. In this magical golden hour shadows slip between the cracks like forgotten thoughts.

halloweenwindows

As promised, here are the window murals I did this week at The Costume Shoppe for Halloween. Painted windows are difficult to photograph. This is the best shot I could get, but you get the idea. It was my first time painting on glass, so it was a challenge to understand how the paint would behave-or not.

brushextension

The sun was shining in my eyes for a large part of the time. I worked over a stairwell for the one, so I had to devise an extension for my brush, as no ladder could be used. It was a fun task, and I would do it again.

Painting the insides of the windows meant everything was reversed, which meant things are done in reverse. Frequent trips outside were required to see how it looked. Regular brushes cannot be used on their own, as they leave brush marks. I used glow in the dark solar paint for things like the moon, so it will glow at night.

And up there grew a flower,

On My Easel

rose3a-2011_sm

Warm hot summer winds come with traces of fondness, their dusty scent sparks deep remembering.

Here is what is on my easel. Two more roses in progress. I thought I might do a series of one dozen. These are number three and four, 12 X 12 in the early stages. The finished product will look different in colour.

What you see here is the under-painting, where I determine values and form. Then colours are applied over, often in glazes, or with the technique of scumbling for lighter colours. On the second one shown here I have begun that process. Number one and two can be seen in the previous blog post.

rose4-2011_sm

I started this post a couple of weeks ago, but my priority is looking for work. Besides revamping my art business I am getting things sorted here, and ready to launch into a new career~just waiting for the call!

Look me up on Google+ if you would like to connect there. Testing it out, as well as the chrome browser, which is functioning far better than my usual Firefox.

I intend to stay on Facebook as well where you can visit my artist page, and my ZenHairBiz page, and of course join me on Twitter if you are on there. The more the merrier. I love connecting.

I am doing a STUDIO CLEAR-OUT and have listed some specially priced items for sale in My Etsy Shop. Making room for the new. Remember this is a life redesign.

If you are in Calgary and wish to purchase any work directly from me, please contact me. I will even personally deliver. If you would like to be informed of my art news please subscribe to my newsletter, which I am building as we speak.

Life Redesign

Rose

Starting from ground zero is what it feels like. Truthfully, I think things are just occurring at a deeper level. It is a matter of toning muscles that have not been used in a while.

The beginning was slow, awkward and not without effort. The tubes of colour felt most familiar, like old friends. I had not picked up a brush for more than a year. My observations told me to focus on connecting my heart to what I was doing. Steps preceding the flow state can seem mechanical. When things do not feel natural it is a good idea to coax for optimal results.

I wanted some smaller pieces for the Ladybug Festival this coming weekend. So this is what I am working on and require some finishing touches. These are smaller than usual; 12 X 12, Acrylic on Canvas.

Once again I will be performing at 1:30 pm at Priddis Valley Gardens. Many other activities and performers will be part of the festivities. If you are in the Calgary area, consider bringing your family for a day of fun. The admission fee goes to the Healing Garden Charity, and the parking is abundant and free.

Rose 2

I have been restructuring my life from the inside out. As an artist, constantly embracing change keeps me fresh and aware and allow for new ways of looking at things.

My current job is ending, as the company I work for is taking a new direction. The Music Academy, thirty years running, is closing permanently at the end of June.

Having just moved house recently, there was an innate knowing that my job would change too. Life is like that, especially when one is undergoing a life redesign.

My position as Education Director has been successful and enjoyable. I have been fortunate to connect with some great people. Now it is time for a new assignment. Despite not knowing where I will land, the possibilities seem exciting.

In the market for employment, and open to a variety of opportunities, I know I will be guided to the right place. If you know of a fit, please connect us. Visit My LinkedIn Profile to see what I have to offer.

Thoughts on the Process of Art

viewfinder_sm

In my soul searching I have come to a deeper understanding of some of the fundamentals regarding my creative journey.

The process of art is observation. Technical knowledge does not overrule observation at a conscious level.

Mindful seeing. The view is both internal, and external, microcosm, macrocosm, as it is within, so it is without. Sensing space between the lines and forms, data is filtered and new connections made.

Patterns emerge through lines and shapes, forms creating rhythm and texture. Our perception is a projector onto the canvas, reflecting the essence of inspiration.

A lifetime of observation delivers with smooth precision on the canvas effortlessly transformed by imagination. The place where pure expression exists without modification.

Balance is unspoken, an internal knowing. The integration of what at first appears to be opposing forces may be the only true reality.

‘”Beauty is truth, truth beauty,” – that is all/Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.’ ~Keats

A hushed moment, however fleeting, is etched into the mind forever. Trees in their grandeur allow gentle beauty that reaches to the depths of soul. Immersed in the golden pools of light, I gather the energies for the next creative manifestation.

Prevailing Flow

dahlias-sweetpeas

Well here we are in summer, despite the random golf ball sized hail, summer prevails. Perennials are shorter this year, with fewer smaller blooms.

I do have a patch of sunflowers out back by the garage, planted from seed that are doing well, as well as a patch of dahlias and callas started from bulbs. Sweet peas are coming up near the front porch.

This is a challenging area for gardening, and I have noticed many have turned to container gardening, which they can bring in if the weather is too severe. It was at least a week into June before anything could go into the ground. Once again I have been relying on the gardens of others for picture taking. My hollyhocks never did reappear.

pale pink

The truth is I have not had much energy for gardening, or other things as well. Turns out my thyroid has become under active. I began homoeopathic treatment for it two and a half weeks ago, and I feel some difference already. It takes time to remap the body.

Apparently hypothyroidism is one of the problems that can be corrected with homoeopathy. It was a tremendous relief to find out the cause of my symptoms, and to be on the path to wellness. Clearing my body, and clearing my space. I am on vacation, a stay-cation, finding time for relaxation, neglected tasks, and to set some new patterns. I will do some shorter day trips, including Banff this weekend. I hope to have some interesting experiences to share.

I may have to move within the next six months. I have become attached to this spot, having been here almost six years. Part of me wants to stay, but I feel a slight excitement of having new digs, which may be therapeutic. My vision is more light, French doors, and everything on one level. I have begun the clearing process, which will make room for new things to enter my life. Shifting is constant, reshaping our lives moment by moment.

River-Path

This piece has been on my easel since before the art show. I was frantically working on it the night before the show was hung, and my friend came by to assist in the show set up, and said, “Deb … Deb … put the brush down! It’s over.”

Her words did not sink in, initially (not the first time that has happened), yet, as the glaze over my eyes started to clear, I could see she was serious, and right. It was time to pack up the brushes and paints, and transport what I had. It is a good thing I do not paint in oils, or I would be transporting wet paintings all of the time!

Now I am wondering can I get back into the flow. I thought it could be inspirational and motivational to post this work in progress. What I love about this painting so far; the contrast, the light, the water is almost heart shaped, the tree branches are almost bowing to drink, and there is a pathway from the heart to the light. Now tell me, did you see all of that in it’s early stages? Should be interesting to see what prevails.

Early Spring Remnants

Grasslands

The show is in the main gallery at Artpoint, and runs until the end of April. If you are in Calgary, and get a chance, stop down on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday during Gallery hours, or contact me for a private viewing!

Some of the pieces were rather large for this show, the largest being 48″ X 72″. This is Grasslands, a common sight in southern Alberta. Our gallery now has a blog, and created an article about my show! You can see a few more pieces there.

quan-yin

I think this one is my favourite. It is the one piece I find myself most intimately connected with, Quan-Yin, Goddess of Compassion. If you would like to see the show set up as well as other tidbits, check out my Facebook page.

I intend to do some gardening this summer. The arborists were here and did a fine job of sculpting the trees complete with yard cleanup. The seven huge pines were beginning to block out the light. It now feels so spacious. My gardening palette is ready!

Besides existing perennials, I have a vision for dahlias, hollyhocks, bleeding heart, callas, as well as some large sunflowers. A river trip is in order to find some smooth stones enhance and buildup my rock garden, which has been suffering neglect for the last two years.

I have my eye on a new digital camera. It seem my current one has almost run it’s course, thanks to enthusiasm and planned obsolescence. I have taken more than 20,000 pictures with it, so it has served me well.

This weekend is spring cleanup! Out with the old and into the new. Then I think a celebration will be in order to commemorate the months of hard work.

More Expansion

day lily

Belated Happy New Year Everyone! A fresh decade is off to a busy start. Has anyone noticed how the days seem to be moving rapidly, and seasons appear to be interchangeable.

First painting of the new year!
Day Lily- Acrylic on Canvas 16 X 20. This was done from a photograph I took of the day lilies I grew in my garden. Speaking of gardening, I am already thinking up some ideas for the coming gardening season, with faith that this year will be a good year for horticulture.

More hollyhocks, and some sunflowers along the side of the garage. This is a year of transformation, and the remaining old paint will peel off and be sanded, making way for fresh paint.

I have received a promotion at work to Music Academy Director! I am enjoying the work and the people there, and grateful for the opportunity!

Things have been busy, and I must have some new paintings for my April Art Show, as I have reserved the main gallery at ArtPoint. I will try to keep you posted on my progress. For now I will post this, because I started this post one month ago exactly!

Suspended Animation

hollyhock-freezeWe are in a state of suspended animation here. Perhaps this is a result of Jupiter going direct. Leaves still green are frozen in their tracks, some fallen to the ground, and some still clinging to the trees.

Wondering about what their state will be when temperatures warm later in the week. One thing for certain is the flowers are unlikely to come back to life. This is my state of ultimate denial, where I demonstrate hanging on to hope, even when there appears to be none.

My computer is in the computer hospital, and most of my picture files are on there. It is quite apparent how heavily we rely on these devices. I am hoping it is just a fan, having replaced the power supply, and finding it still has the same noise. Meanwhile I am reporting to you from my laptop, which does not have all the bells and whistles of my regular PC. I have never quite perfected the laptop mouse technique.

bare-trees

In the meantime, I am painting and getting ready for my show. Allowing myself to paint whatever I feel like without judgment, I am having fun with these bare trees. This one is still in progress.

This show; Transmutation, will be in the Upstairs Salon, the medium sized gallery at Artpoint, which is an artist run center as I have mentioned before.

Many things are in the works, and this show will be a pivotal stepping stone to what comes next.

I am considering doing a clear out of some older pieces so stop by ArtPoint sometime between Nov 6 and Nov 28. Remember the early bird gets the worm!

In April I will have a big show in the main gallery, which I believe will mark a new phase in my process as an artist.

Fabulous News!

birds in a row

How I love to watch the birds feeding at this time of year. The addition of suet to the offerings has brought many. When I stroll through the garden at the side of the house they swoop upwards enmasse into the pines with a whisper of wings which quells the heart. Indeed the heart is as a little bird, sensitive and fluttering.

Now for the fabulous news. I have become a member of ArtPoint Gallery & Studios, which is an artist run society, studios and gallery. Upon submission of my portfolio, I was juried in by the jury of other artists. I am looking forward to contributing to the society and connecting and being part of a network of artists which will really be empowering.

Figure DrawingsThis means I still have to work at marketing and promoting my own art, but I have a place to show it, which will give me more visibility.

Being a member of ArtPoint will certainly help me take my art career to the next level. Their aim is to be a model for artist run cooperatives and I am thrilled to be a part of it all.

Monday night I attended the weekly Figure Drawing session at ArtPoint. Here are some bits and pieces resulting from drawing from a live model, one minute to twenty minutes sketches with charcoal and conte crayons. They are done fairly quickly and not necessarily complete. Wonderful practice while contributing to an inspiring head-space. May your head-space be awesome this week!

Golden Light Flow

Golden LightGolden light seeps in, permeating the surroundings deeper and deeper.

Still no urgency to prepare for winter, in the current upswing of warm temperatures.

Formulating is the next step in my process of creating. Wonderful things are taking shape. No sense of when things will manifest just yet. I have a busy busy mind, so a great deal of still time through meditation is required. Staying grounded and reclaiming my energy is of utmost importance.

Dance Tree PaintingI am pleased to announce this painting has been sold! Congratulations to the new owners. The finished work was probably not posted here, at least I was unable to find it.

This was inspired by Emily Carr, painted right after seeing her show.

Ironically it is going to live in Victoria, where Emily Carr spent many of her years.

At the moment I have been clearing things out of my life which are no longer useful to me. I wish I could say that I am finished this part of the process but that is not the case. Still more to do.

In this way I am making myself ready for new things to come in. Creating that space now. It requires clearing all aspects physical, emotional, mental spiritual. Getting rid of what no longer fits. Opening up the flow.

So if my postings are not as frequent, you will know I am simply aligning myself and blogging without obligation!

Summer Blazes

Hollyhock BudsLate afternoon breezes graze the hushed hotness of the day offering small relief. It is another scorcher! Restless, not wanting to budge, I am enveloped by the throb of the summer heat. Woolgathering thoughts hover like the predaceous wasps, relentless. Muffled flutter of a bird’s wings like rustling taffeta breaks the monotony.

Pink Hollyhock

Hollyhocks are plentiful this year. This is the first variety to appear in my garden. I have a family of white lady bugs living on a red bee balm bloom.

What fascination nature offers! Sleepless hot summer nights continue.

Porch lights dot the neighborhood deep into the wee hours. This was not always the case. People are on edge here. An arson spree went on only about eight blocks from where I live on Friday night. What an alarming precursor to the full moon and partial eclipse. No suspects are in hand, so I and the neighbors wait breathlessly, hoping for a faint sign, a clue to who was responsible. I confess my sleep is scarce since this. Here is a haiku I am fond of.

Sunflower WatercolourSpeaking of burn, I am sunburned from painting out of doors yesterday I went to a little workshop at a community garden.

Yea I actually got outside to paint-next time I will bring sunscreen. It was fun experimenting with watercolors again, which is the medium I started with.

Sometimes it is good to go back to the very basics. Simplify, reconstruct and reinvent.
