Artist Statement

Artist Statement

A self representing artist, I enjoy creating art that encompasses a wide variety of subjects. I have been working on a number of spiritual art paintings inspired by dreams and my own spiritual experiences.

I strive to create art which is a blend of realistic and magical. My art is a blend of realistic, and magical, exploring the emotion & spiritual of nature and the human condition in my painting. My focus includes landscapes, flowers, macro floral, figures and nature scenes in oils, acrylics and watercolour.

Inspiration is found in the simplest of things, a raindrop on a window, a certain glow of light, reflections & shadows. The metamorphosis never ends, as things continue to expand offering more clarity, I simplify, embellish and let the creative flow through me.

Creativity, no matter what form, is a path from the soul, and I have found that one area of expression feeds another. Raw talent, in itself, is just that. That is why I have spent years honing the craft, to achieve the desired outcome.

I am especially fascinated by colour and how it relates to sound and form. Learning to see, translating what the mind’s eye sees to brush & canvas, is a rewarding challenge.

Being in the moment of creation, the excitement I feel, as a piece nears completion, is the ultimate experience. The learning process never ends. Being an artist means a lifetime of observation and recreating little bits and pieces in my art practise and sharing them with you.

I would like to know that I have touched people somehow, through my art, and personally.

My artwork can be found in Canada, USA, Mexico, England, Europe, and the Caribbean. I reside in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

What others have to say about working with me!

Nursery Mural with much-loved popular characters & some lesser known ones.

Our 2018 started off with the most pleasant experience, meeting Deborah. We were looking for a nursery mural artist in the Calgary area and came across her website. We e-mailed her with a summary of the vision for the nursery. She was quick to respond, asking if she could some see the space in person.

Everyone else we contacted was quick to give a price without much detail. Some promised to come visit with a quote and never showed up. Deborah came and from the first interaction we knew she was the right person to make our dream come true.

About the mural

She was also great meeting our 2 German Shepherds which would be roaming the home while she would be here painting. Her calm demeanour with them put us at ease, and it is always a good sign when your dogs like someone! Deborah took our vision and created the most beautiful, breathtaking, cartoon mural for the nursery.

We love the portrait of our dogs on the wall that formed part of the theme. She painted a decorative silhouette on the crib, so it would blend with the theme of the room.

If you are looking for an artist who puts her heart in her work and the results show this, then Deborah is your person. We already have more projects in mind for her, so we can incorporate more of her artwork in our home.

Our friends and family back home in Ontario have been left speechless with the results, as we showed them pictures, and they can’t wait to see the magic in person. ~Rita Potestio & Mazen Khosho

More Testimonials

The Cherry Blossom Tree Mural, 14′ wide and 8′ high, painted in a master bedroom. The owners of the new mural expressed their delight:

“Thank you so much for the mural of the cherry blossom tree in our bedroom, it’s amazing and we are really happy with it! Many thanks, Mark and Fabi”

The Prep Program found the mural changed their space positively:

“We are all so impressed with the tree and garden. We absolutely love it! It’s warm, bright, inviting, calming and beautiful. We couldn’t have asked for anything better. We really appreciate your work and the kids will too!“ Thanks so much! ~Marissa Turner, ECS Coordinator, The PREP Program

St. Matthews United Church in Killarney was happy with the finished result. Furthermore, it will improve the walk-ability of the neighbourhood. I noticed people were drawn to the area while working on the scaffolding.

The mural looks amazing!

Grateful for my gifts and talents to create beauty. I spent years developing them, and I am still learning. I love to share this with others.

If you are an art lover, consider investing in a piece of fine art for yourself. Why not commission me to do something special for you? Owning a piece of original fine art is an investment that you can cherish for years to come. To see my art, visit my Galleries.

I work in pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, oils and acrylic. Keeping an art journal regularly is one of my goals. My love of nature attracted me to plein air painting. Summer is short in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I have been known to sketch in my car while temperatures plummet (during my years of living in the Arctic) and to tote my paints with me.  Being surrounded by world renown beautiful scenery, from foothills to mountains to lakes and rivers is a true inspiration.

As well as painting miniature art, I also paint large-scale works, murals, environments and theme development. Many artists who do large-scale works are also known to create miniatures. There is something to the expression, “Go big, or stay home.”

    Living Authentically

    wild hollyhocks

These hollyhocks were found growing on a hillside in an older area of the city as I drove by. Hollyhocks do not grow wild to my knowledge. Maybe the seeds were carried by the wind or by birds, or perhaps a house once stood there.

In my own inner garden, I have been stripping away the excess for months now, even years. My intention is to stay in clarity, because that is the only way I can make decisions. The lack of clarity had kept me stuck for a long time. Clarity requires us to stand our ground and to have a voice.

I played jazz on the piano recently for a wedding, and it felt so good. I was really immersed, feeling the rhythm. It took me to that place within myself that is really me. I was out of touch and now that I have found it, I intend to spend stay conscious of this gift. It’s a state of mind really.

Over time it has been increasingly difficult to fit myself into situations which are not me. Many times I have taken jobs, knowing I could do them, partly for the money and partly because of external pressures. At the time I never considered the consequences of going against the grain, not honouring my true self.

“To thine own self be true.” ~Shakespeare

Though I can do many things, I want to focus on that which holds the most meaning for me. For a long time I have been saying I must live my passions. It is the pathway to my authentic self and what I have always known to be true. I set that intention some time ago, and now the universe is conspiring to see that I stay on the path. Following the heart always feels right though I do feel like I am free falling.

    Leopard Mural

Ironically my ability to make my rent this month was supported primarily by my art. And that is the first time it has happened that way, so I think progress is being made.

This is a custom mural panel I just finished. It is acrylic on hardboard, with gold-leaf and mica flakes. The abstract portion is hard to show in a photo, but also has a beautiful smooth textured surface. It felt so good to pass on a commissioned work to its proud new owner.

Art is a language, a form of communication. Without an audience the cycle does not complete and art does not perform its full function, nor does the artist. And it is such a feeling of fulfillment to be able to pass a piece to another. What a feeling of bliss, when one is doing what one is designed to do!

    Unwrapping the Mystery

My studio is a very busy place these days. Many projects on the go, which of course, makes for a bigger mess. They are coming soon, I promise. I so want to finish all these paintings, yet they come in their own time.

The romantic notion, of artist at the easel, surrounded by paint colours, creating something from nothing, although formidable, is only part of the equation.

Realistically a great deal of the artist’s time is spent as an independent business person. Striving to maintain a balance between creative work with bookkeeping, marketing and strategic planning is hard work. I am fortunate to be able to do what I enjoy.

People tend to admire talent, often commenting, ‘You’re so lucky, I wish I could do that’, when in fact luck had very little to do with it. What is invisible, to their eyes, are the years of diligent study, hours of practise, and failed attempts.

Yet persistence and determination have removed some of the roadblocks, allowing me to continue on my path. True, artistic talent may be a gift, yet it is what we put into it that makes all the difference. Unhoned talent is like an unopened package, whose contents are still unknown.

Unwrap the mystery. If you have received a gift, unwrap it, prepare to surprise yourself, take a risk, step beyond the limits you have set for yourself. You may find something beyond what you can dream or desire.
